Beaumont Newhall wrote the first comprehensive history of photography in 1949, updating the text through the early 1980s, shortly before his death. Newhall was an art history professor at the University of New Mexico, where, according to legend, the 76 year-old scholar received a MacArthur Fellowship and immediately vacated his teaching post. The History of Photography: From 1839 to the Present Day remains the most widely-used history text in American universities.
